Spotlight on a talented, stylish and Cool Film maker

Hi Ladies !

The love of Fashion brings creative people together . While attending a seasonal Fashion swap I was fortunate to meet an make a new friend . Michelle is one of those women I really like: creative and REAL.

She is a young Frum woman in the Entertainment Industry .That alone is pretty cool!

Here at my blog I like to showcase women who are true to themselves and who love fashion . Since Michelle embodies that on both counts. I have asked her to share her thoughts with my beloved readers .

WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO THE ENTERTAINMENT BUSINESS?

As far back as I can remember I have been watching old movies and television shows!
I used to sit on the couch for hours with my dad eating BBQ chips and watching “Rockford Files”. Every day before school my siblings and I would eat breakfast and watch an episode of Gilligan's Island before running off to school. Once sent to bed I would sneak back downstairs and watch whatever bits and pieces of films I could, like “Gone With The Wind” & “Rebel Without A Cause”.
Growing up, movies and television were a part of me, they were with me through everything and shaped me as I went along. So when it came time to choose a career, this industry was the natural easy choice. It wasn’t even really a choice. It just was.

WHAT HAVE YOU ACCOMPLISHED TO DATE?

In 2004 I created my production company, Oy-Oy Productions, and we have since produced, directed and written 7 award winning films that have been screened worldwide! 2 in the Youth division of the Toronto International Film Festival, as I was 16 & 17 at the time.
After graduating from Tanenbaum Community Hebrew Academy of Toronto, I went on to earn my B.A. (Hones.) in Film Studies from York University.
My latest film, a documentary on a Jewish man who escaped from Syria in 1950 (“Wanted: The Joseph Esses Story”, 2013), was awarded at the 2013 Sephardic Film Festival in L.A., reviewed in New York’s Jewish Image Magazine, The Jewish Tribune, Shalom Toronto and The Canadian Jewish News!
I am also a published writer and essayist, having had my works in The Student Journal of Canadian Jewish Studies, In Fashion Magazine (New York, New York) and TVOntario Magazine.

ANY NEW PROJECTS ON THE HORIZON?

I’m constantly writing and creating and looking to hear of new projects out there where I can assist!
I developed a new childrens program through Oy-Oy Productions, called “Reel Shtick”!
I go (along with my trusty camera and suit case full of fun costumes and props) to schools, community centres, events and childrens birthday parties and help them create their own “Kosher” film. From plot, to filming, together we create anything their imaginations can conjure up. I take it home, edit it, and shortly after each child gets their own final cut of the film they made on DVD! It’s a really fun and unique program and a great way to get children excited about filmmaking and video creation in a safe and encouraging way. There is not enough venues out there for children to create good, clean, funny and meaningful works of art. Oy-Oy Productions means to change all that and bring filmmaking to the frum community.

WHO ARE YOUR STYLE ICONS?

You can’t say the word “style” and not immediately think of the obvious – Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, Jackie O or Ginger Rogers! I have my moments where I like to change it up and go for a more hippie feel, like the great Janis Joplin or Grace Slick, but at the end of the day I always go back to that image of grace, poise and elegance.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ITEM IN YOUR CLOSET?

That’s hard! I love all my sweaters (I’m a sweater-set and pearls kind of girl!).

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE STYLE TRENDING NOW?

I really like how we have gone back to a more conservative feel, covering our arms and knees. You see a lot of Maxi dresses and black-tie dresses with long sleeves. I love that! I say more fabric! Add to the item you love! So that and big hats. I really like my hats and have more than a girl should.

Thank you Michelle!
