Frum Fashion Maven Trend Report for Fall/winter 2011/2012

Even though the weather is hot outside fall IS approaching soon... so, I figured I better post this Fall/winter 2011/2012 report so you ladies can plan your post 3 weeks fall shopping sprees.

Traditionally during the colder seasons designers normally prefer using neutral or more "safe" and reserved colors like black, camel, brown, navy, cream, dark violet, etc. However, this fall the collections were filled with brighter hues like crimson (controversial tznius wise so ask your LOR), bright or burnt orange, purples, blues, ocres ,mustards ,deep moss and bright greens and others. These eye-popping tones were creatively combined into the 1960’s inspired color blocking trend which was huge for spring and summer. 1970’s earthy glam looks were also big and tznius friendly along with the adorable, chic ladylike 1940’s inspired fashion. This eclectic fall season there is a look and trend for everyone.

Some fun color combos to try for fun:
Orange+gray+ red accent piece
Orange+cream+camel
Green+black+ yellow accent piece
Mustard+gray+purple
Olive green+navy
Orange+chocolate brown+ purple
For more inspiration on interesting uses of color and contrast Google designers Haider Ackermann, Alberta Ferretti, Victoria Beckham, Tommy Hilfiger and Burberry Prorsum.

Texture:Creating eccentric collage like textures was huge among designers. Silk was paired with fur and knitwear, sequins with leather and even plastic with chiffon and wool. Sounds crazy? It does. And it does look a bit crazy, too, so use common sense and good taste at all times …LOL. Layers were also used to create textures. Layered looks were done by Gucci, Christian Dior and others.

1940s Elegance: As we all know, Fashion repeats itself… B'H for fall/ winter 1940's 40s elegance is again a hot trend. The best approach to reinvent this fashion era has been realized by Gucci, John Galliano, Miu Miu, and Jonathan Saunders and Marc Jacobs.
Midi and Maxi skirts:This Frum Friendly trend is continuing for fall. Designers who excelled in showcasing this trend were Dries Van Noten, Chloe, Balenciaga, Roland Mouret, Antonio Marras, St.John etc. For affordable maxi skirts view my post on Mango clothing.

Prints: Prada started the eclectic print trend last spring with the cool banana print skirt and it looks like the cheerful trend is being carried into fall! This is good news for print lovers as the variety of prints this fall is huge: from tiny polka dots at Gucci, big ones at Mark Jacobs to girly paisleys in Anna Sui and flowers at Versace. Miu Miu had glittering spring flowers, Ungaro featured feather like prints, Sonia Rykiel had bows and stripes….If you love prints there is truly something for everyone.

Pleats on skirts and dresses:Dust off those full seminary pleated skirts!! As they were featured everywhere (even in leather). The prettiest pleats were found at the Valentino, Oscar de la Renta and Christian Dior Fall/ winter collections.

Animal prints:Besides the usual prints, like leopard and python (yikes!), to which we have already got accustomed due to the fact every single season designers use these in their creations ….this fall we see lots of feathers, wild animals printed on fabric (Givenchy, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Topshop and Ungaro), hats in shape of lions and panthers at Anna Sui, etc. I personally can only do leopard in a pair of awesome Tory Burch flats, in tops or cardigans I feel like I’m dressed for Purim LOL!

Chunky Knit Sweaters and long duster coats:Fall and winter are cold seasons, so there is no wonder why designers have included warm chunky sweaters into their collections. Pair with leather, suede or even ethereal fabrics for an unexpected romantic twist. Long duster coats are coming back; I love the cozy bathrobe like feel of a cashmere one!!

Fur (Faux or vintage): As with sweaters, fur is the perfect material for winter. And it looks so chic!!!I love it in a vest paired with a maxi or midi skirt for some 1970’s glamour. On the runways fur was dyed all sorts of crazy colors …follow your personal style AND common sense.

Leather and suede: Leather is a big trend this year. You can go for a total leather look like Hermes offers or restrict yourself to separate items or even details in leather. Burberry blew it for me by using spikes and grommets ….But I’m excited that leather skirts are in I love my demure yet cool vintage pleated leather skirt!
Readers …I have waited 2 seasons to be able to wear it, I will try to post a picture so you see how chic AND tznius leather can look. Suede skirts give a nod to 70’s fashion and look lovely in camels or brown.

Coats: Coats this season are all very diverse. Military inspired coats were shown at Versace, a youthful cropped trench at Burberry. More timeless luxury choices were shown at Michael Kors and Gucci. Oscar de la Renta showed some cute cropped hooded coats trimmed with fur. Hermes went all out retro with some wider poncho style coats. The variety is almost unlimited.

Some of my favorite trends for fall are:

*Ponchos/big sweaters
*Leather pleated skirt
*1940's glam for shabbat
*1970's chic for everyday casual wear(DVF fall style)
*Cuffs/bracelets: Cuffs and bracelets continue to be a big trend for fall.
*Vintage inspired shoes. After years of teetering around on sky-high heels, I am relieved see so many kitten heels and vintage looking shoes this season.
*Happy bright colors to brighten the "winter blahs"...

Enjoy!
